It was almost 11 years ago that I saw this production for the first time (2005-05-01) and I do not like it much. The singing was superb on this occacion. Jorge de Leon (Turriddu) and Elena Zhidkova (Santuzza) have the most amazing voices, strong, vibrant voices and the acting was also superb. Ronnita Miller who looked like a Mama from another show was the definitive Mamma Lucia. I found the whole opera Cavalleria Rusticana much more to my liking with this Mamma Lucia. She was so real, so touching and yes, totally believable. Lola was also very good. Mark Delavan was Alfio. His acting was all there but the voice was not up to the high power of rest of the cast which was a shame.

The production has its wonderful moments like the Mass with all the icons and the Hymn. The Lord is risen. The chorus was amazing and Elena Zhidkova was the high light and supported by the wonderful Mamma Lucia, Ronnita Miller. It was an OK production with an incredible cast. Or I should say the cast was very credible and real.

Worst moment was when Turridu is murdered and a doll was sent flying down and Reality just flew away. It was unbelievable, stupid and a crude moment.

Why was Cavalleria Rusticana after Pagliacci, maybe because... No, impossible to guess. The only thing that is important is that it worked very well.

This production, unlike the Pagliacci production was not right a way just right for me. Both ideas was all action in the same place. Which naturally meant that the Siciliana was sung backstage when the curtain was down. Then when the opera started all we saw was a desert, and that was Cavalleria Rusticana. Sometimes it was a desert with Jesus on the cross etc, so that was I guess "the Church" and Easter celebration. And a desert with some chairs was Mamma Lucia's tavern. But this desert made it very real when the people came from work with oranges, except, for oranges to grow is not a desert a very natural thing, no. So it sort of worked, but just when you are not thinking :-).

So that was the production ideas. But what really made it work was the film in the back ground. Showing the sky and sea. Dark sky when it was almost night still etc. And of course the thunder that made the whole chorus disappear when it started to rain, and made it possible for Santuzza to have a private dialogue with Mamma Lucia (Voi lo sapete, o mamma). And during the duet Santuzza/Turriddu the Jesus-statures was being carried away.

But all this would not have worked if the singers had just stood there. It worked because of the great acting and singing, so the director had really done his bit. Salvatore Licitra was a wonderful Turriddu and Susan Neves was a wonderful Santuzza.

For me the only thing is that Susan Neves, she is a wonderful soprano with great vocal range, but she is NOT a MEZZO. And for me Santuzza is a mezzo voice like Agnes Baltsa.

And after the opera, we met the singers from Cavalleria Rusticana: Salvatore Licitra was dressed like a racer driver and Susan Neves looked liked she was just any normal woman, instead of the reality, a FANTASTIC soprano (wow, I wish I had managed to take a splashing good photo of her, but my camera did not take my photos when I pressed the button, but waited some seconds too many).

Well, I guess, singers sometimes long for normality after work.

I suffered so with this Santuzza, the rejection of the villagers and even priests and children. It was almost unbearable to watch. I have never felt such a depression from this opera before. I felt that I was in this village that was so closed to kindness. Georgina Lukács was wonderful as Santuzza. Acting and with her voice. Really sad that it is the women who suffer most in such a patriarchal culture. When Turriddu was killed ...

Innegiamo with Lukács was a great moment of rare beauty and sense of kindness....

I really liked this production (Gian Carlo del Monaco) Ildiko Komlosi was wonderful as Santuzza. Kristjan Johannsson was OK as Turriddu (if only José Cura had sung it instead, what about, Cura conducts and sings Turriddu at the same time, somebody else acts Turriddu). Seng Hyoun Ko was wonderful as Alfio. Olive Fredricks was great as Mamma Lucia. Antigone Papoulkas was OK as Lola.

I think Cura was doing OK as a conductor, hard for me to say.

February 20, 2010: Cavalleria Rusticana in Vienna

2010-02-20 Cavalleria Rusticana (P. Mascagni), Wiener Staatsoper

Santuzza = Dolora Zajick
Turiddu = José Cura
Alfio = Alberto Mastromarino
Mamma Lucia = Auro Twarowska
Lola = Roxana Constanisnescu

Asher Fisch, conductor

José Cura first performance in Vienna State Opera as Turriddu in Cavalleria Ructicana was a gigantic success. From the first moment I heard a tenor in great vocal shape. The Siciliniana was beautifully sung. His acting abilities makes him a superb Turriddu. Dolora Zajick was a good Santuzza, vocally and acting.

Aura Twarowska also sang for the first the role of Mamma Lucia in Vienna State Opera on February 20, 2010. She was great. Alberto Mastromarino was his usual Alfio, vocally not quite as great as I have heard him on earlier CavRust performances. Lola, Roxana Constantinescu, was also solidly sung.

As it was not the first time I saw this Jean-Pierre Ponelle production I noticed some small changes that made it even more clear what cruel situation Santuzza is in here. Even more pointing fingers than before. More hypocrisy. This time I think Alfio and all the village knows about Lola and Turriddu. They know about Turriddu and Santuzza too, why else would they be so cruel to Santuzza. Because Lola is married to a rich and powerful man, Alfio, in this village they pretend she is good. Because Santuzza had the mark of evil, read hear, and comes from the poor part of the village she is easy target. Turriddu is accepted although they don't really see much in him, he is a drunkard, because he is after all a man. And a man can do no evil, unless outed by another man.

December 17, 2011: Cavalleria Rusticana in Copenhagen

2011-12-17 Cavalleria Rusticana (Mascagni), The Royal Danish Theatre (Copenhagen)

Santuzza = Irene Theorin
Turiddu = José Cura
Alfio = Fredrik Zetterström
Mamma Lucia = Randi Stene
Lola = Hanne Fischer

Stefano Ranzani, Conductor
Director - Kasper Holten
Set design - Mia Stensgaard
Costume design - Anja Vang Kragh
Light design - Bruno Poet

I enjoyed Cavalleria Rusticana. I actually did enjoy it. Irene Theorin was Santuzza in this production by director Kasper Holten with set designs by Mia Stensgaard and costumes by Anja Vang Kragh. She was on the stage during the whole opera with just a few seconds off. The director was really good in how the actions of Turriddu, Santuzza, Lola, Mamma Lucia and Alfio really reflected the persons' reality. The chorus did not get the individuel treatment. Here the chorus are mostly just a crowd, a menacing group, that acts with cruelty almost all the time. The director is really using the chorus to hammer us with the cruelty of the situation of Santuzza. This is the modern way of opera production: nothing is allowed to be nuanced, not if one can just hammer it down. Still. I enjoyed it. The music was beautifully played. Irene Theorin was close to an ideal Santuzza, even if one could still notice a wide vibrato. José Cura sang one of his best Turriddus. Hanne Fischer was a joy as Lola, what a voice, lush, beautiful, and full. One could actually believe Turriddu to fall for her, and to be so blind to Lola just being so totally self-sentered. Randi Stene was wonderful as Mamma Lucia. The role doesn't give her much to work on, sadly this production makes her even more invisible. Mamma Lucia is here reduced to a woman who almosts begs the people to buy her wine. Fredrik Zetterström was Alfio. Either he had a cold and could not sing out, or the role was simply beyond his vocal means, but as an actor he owned the role.

August 28, 2011: Cavalleria Rusticana in Bergen, Norway

2011-08-28 Cavalleria Rusticana (Mascagni), Opera Bergen

Santuzza = Elena Zelenskaya
Turiddu = Eduardo Villa
Alfio = Anooshah Golesorkhi
Mamma Lucia = Tone Kvam Thorsen
Lola = Sylvia Skeie Vik

Anne Randine Øverby, conductor
Stage director - Rocc
Light design - Jens Lange

The crisp, clear sounds of Cavalleria Rusticana had never sounded more beautiful and true than the orchestra of Opera Bergen played it under its leader Anne Randine Øverby. Beatiful and clear it sounded at the same time it served the drama.

Musically the low-point for me was the Siciliana sung Eduardo Villa. It sounded like it was sung by an old tenor at the end of his career. Is it that the Siciliana (O Lola, ch'ai di latti la cammisa) is so difficult to sing right, or is it just that it is the beginning of the opera. I don't know. I just know that Eduardo Villa convinced me vocally and dramatically later in the evening, especially in the duet between Turriddu and Santuzza.

The evening was an evening of old, seasoned opera singers. They all warmed up or maybe it was me who warmed up to them. But then it was the Regie of young director Rocc that almost ruined Cavalleria Rusticana singelhandedly.

The chorus, who was they supposed to be in this production. Was they drunken teen-agers from a graduation party? Lola and Mamma Lucia seemed to work in this "High School". I imagined Mamma Lucia as the rector. Lola as just one of the teachers. Alfio, her husband, instead of being one of the prominent men of the village seemed to be a traveling beggar.

I mistook Mamma Lucia for Santuzza since she was the first of the principals to present herself and she was even praying. Both Santuzza and Mamma Lucia was had black hair and same age (so it seemed) and they were the only ones who in this production were sincere. In many ways Cavalleria Rusticana was here the story of hypocrites against sincerity. Turriddu was no hypocrite, or was he. And Alfio...

Most of what the chorus did not help the story forward, it confused rather than explain. Was that intentional from director Rocc? But one point was rather good: Instead of the tradional horrendous screaming "Hanno mazzato compare Turriddu" , one of the chorists was given a note and said in the most strange voice this message twice. I think it was THE PROOF of Hypocrisy if we needed it.

Given the material they were given I cannot imagine the principals and chorus could have improved it more. Eduardo Villa was really Turriddu, Elena Zelenskaya was truly Santuzza, I loved Tone Kvam Thorsen's Mamma Lucia (elegant, and so moving), Anooshah Golesorkhi was a solid Alfi, and I disliked Sylvia Skeie Vik (I always dislike LOLA, always, no matter who sings it and especially when they are believable.

And naturally it started to rain in the middle of the opera. Even the weather gods was not loving this opera completely.

Finally I was going to see Jose Cura as Turriddu in Cavalleria Rusticana, and he was wonderful. He sang the Siciliana high up on the steps. Unfortunately for me where I was sitting a saw only the column hiding him. He sang and walked very relaxed. He was the perfect Turriddu. Giovanna Casolla who sang Turandot last year with Jose Cura as Calaf was not so right as Santuzza. She really reminded me why I think this role should be sung by a mezzo soprano. But she did her best to be Santuzza but she was obviously only acting. Rossana Rinaldi was an attractive Lola, making it very obvious why Turriddu preferred her to Santuzza. Jose Cura played a man very much in love with Lola. Carlos Almaguer was an efficient Alfio, very dry voice though. PaolaFornasari was perfect as Lucia. Giovanna Casolla's Santuzza was always best in interaction with Turriddu and Lucia.

July 8, 2009: Cavalleria Rusticana in Zurich

2009-07-08 Cavalleria Rusticana (P. Mascagni), Opernhaus Zurich

Santuzza = Paoletta Marrocu
Turiddu = José Cura
Alfio = Cheyne Davidson
Mamma Lucia = Cornelia Kallisch
Lola = Katharina Peetz

Stefano Ranzani, conductor

It was Real Verismo where every choir member had a role to play, nut as simply a chorus, but as real persons with their own individual lives. There were no masses, only individuals. Wonderful to see such attention to detail in an opera production. Paoletta Marrocu was Santuzza, I wish I could really describe how she acted and sang but nothing, except that she was Santuzza, really. Alfio and Lola, Cheyne Davidson and Katharina Peetz, was the good-looking and wealthy couple. Everybody in the village except Alfio and mamma Lucia knew about Turriddu and Lola. But wealth has it privilege, Lola was still excepted. Santuzza, not. Mamma Lucia, Cornelia Kallisch, was a much deeper role, more sympathetic especially in the end towards Santuzza. José Cura was Turriddu. He was great, even deeper understanding to the role. No wonder he was killed by Alfio, having been drinking a lot, and Alfio had not been drinking alcohol.

Directed by: Cristina Cotescu, based on the work of Franco Zeffirelli

It was really a wonderful Cavalleria Rusticana, no wonder since it was based on Zeffirelli. Daniel Magdal had trouble with his top notes, he was not in his best in the O Lola - romance, but he grew better. Sorina Munteanu was admirable Santuzza, a true mezzo, when
she sang in the soprano area she was still a very good, but I think I would have loved to hear her as Princess Eboli in Verdi´s Don Carlo. Alfio was a young and beautiful baritone, a little to light a voice for the duet with Santuzza. Lola was wonderful. And Lucia was
also good.

June 19, 2011: Cavalleria Rusticana in Zurich

2011-06-19 Cavalleria Rusticana (Mascagni),Opernhaus Zurich

Santuzza = Agnes Baltsa
Turiddu = José Cura
Alfio = Cheyne Davidson
Mamma Lucia = Cornelia Kallisch

Daniele Callegari, conductor

Producer/production - Grischa Asagaroff
Set and costume design - Luigi Perego
Lighting - Hans-Rudolf Kunz
Choir rehearsal - Jürg Hämmerli
Choreography - Tetsu Taoshita

In 2009 it was Paoletta Marrocu who sang Santuzza. This production paints a detailed portrait of Santuzza and her surroundings. The acting was in fine detail. But now 2 years later the details are more fuzzy. Still Agnes Baltsa made a wonderful Santuzza. As the singer is now over 60 it is not suprising that she has lost something in her voice, it is no longer so agile. Much praise has been heeped on the young conductor Daniele Callegari but I found him lacking in looking after for the chorus and the soloists. That did not help Agnes Baltsa who still managed to act and sing a Santuzza that one cared for. Jose Cura as Turriddu was wonderfully played and sung. He came out as almost sympathetic this time. Lola was sung and acted by young Katharina Peetz, a delight as Lola just as her character is a really vamp of a woman. Cornelia Kallisch as Mamma Lucia was also great and a sympathetic character. Cheyne Davidson was like always a solid Alfio.

After my first meeting with the ladies of the Carreras Club Wien at Hotel Astoria, I went to the Staatsoper to see Cavalleria Rusticana & Pagliacci.

Wiener Staatsoper 19.30
Cavalleria Rusticana
with Agnes Baltsa

The Austrian Television was there to record Baltsa in her parade role as Santuzza.

She was on stage the whole opera. Even from the prelude. I have never seen any opera where the music was in every happening on stage. (Like a Ballett).

Santuzza = Agnes Baltsa.
She is condamned by the society. Her fault: being woman, and falling in love with Turriddu. A man of no discretion.

Turriddu = Luis Lima
They (society) must have known about Turriddu and Santuzza. But he is a man. Maybe they even know about him and Lola. Unsympatic figure!

Lola
Married to Alfio. They are prominent members. Lola who has betrayed her husband, is accepted by society. Even when there can be no doubt what have happened between her and Turriddu. (The duel)

Alfio
Rich, admired. For what: being rich? This Alfio, was young and no vulgar figure.

I had already seen some photo from this production so I am a bit prepared. The director has updated it and it is not very picturesque. But although I would like a more traditional Cavalleria Rusticana the singing and acting is excellent. Claire Powell was excellent as Lucia, great acting, singing. The duet Santuzza/Turriddu was amazing.. Mastromarino is the Alfio of our time. And Lola was not bad either. The chorus was singing and acting very well. The production was's not something to cheer about, but the opera is intact and alive, so it is forgiven.

April 17, 2011: Cavalleria Rusticana in Barcelona

Luciana D'Intino did not overplay the role of Santuzza. The only thing I did not like was her "A te, un mala Pasqua", but that is minor. She was perfect as Santuzza. Josephine Barstow gave e refine portrayal of Mamma Lucia. José Cura was a wonderful Turriddu, no drunkenn lout this time but certainly not a intirely sympathetic man. Alfio and Lola was also good. In this production of Cavalleria Rusticana there was an emphasis on that this is a village where nothing is secret for a long time. The villagers sees everything, hears everything behind their curtains. Somebody is always listening. Lola was dressed in white as she went to church. She did not go alone, another woman was with her all dressed in black. The duet between Turriddu and Santuzza showed that Turriddu still have some love for Santuzza. He was not so violent as in most productions. In the end of Cavalleria Rusticana was the ugliest cry of "Hanno mazzato compare Turriddu" which was a shame and a blemish on an otherwise wonderful and sweet production of Cavalleria Rusticana.
