January 30, 2010: Nabucco in Zurich

2010-01-30 Nabucco (Verdi), Opernhaus Zurich

Nabucco = Juan Pons
Ismaele = Boiko Zvetanov
Zaccaria = Carlo Colombara
Abigaille = Maria Guleghina
Fenena = Stefania Kaluza
High Priest of Belo = Cheyne Davidson
Abdallo = Miroslav Christoff
Anna = Liuba Chuchrova

Nello Santi, conductor

NABUCCO by Giuseppe Verdi. Maria Guleghina was a fantastic Abigaille. Juan Pons was suddenly much thinner but still made a great Nabucco. Boiko Zvetanov was looking like a small Dennis O'Neill. But he was great as Ismaele. One could easily forget his heavy and small look and understand why two women were in love with him. Stefania Kaluza was singing Fenena, she was great in the ensembles, duets, etc. but strangely did not make such a great impression in her aria. Chorus was great. Nello Santi conducted.

Obviously Jonathan Miller had been thinking too much about history. Would really the women and men be separated when they were about to be executed.

October 18, 1998: Attila in Zurich

1998-10-18 Attila (Verdi), Opernhaus Zurich

Attila = Ruggero Raimondi
Ezio = Leo Nucci
Odabella = Mara Zampieri
Foresto = Boiko Zvetanov
Uldino = Miroslav Christoff
Leone, alter Römer
[Papst Leo I.] = Guido Götzen

Vladimir Fedoseyev, conductor

Attila at 20.00, during and after Andrea Chenier I had a bit of a head-ache, but to my amazement, I found out that a GREAT opera performance can cure that.

Ruggero Raimondi, was a great Attila, but Nesterenko was better in the video from Verona, I think. Mara Zampieri has the most beautiful voice, and sang the difficult and vocally demanding role of Odabella, in the most exquisite way. Leo Nucci was much better than I would have thought possible for him. Boiko Zwetlanov was as good as anyone singing Forest.

June 19, 2011: Pagliacci in Zurich

2011-06-19 Pagliacci (Leoncavallo), Opernhaus Zurich

Canio (Pagliaccio) = José Cura
Nedda (Colombina) = Myrtò Papatanasiu
Tonio (Taddeo) = Carlo Guelfi
Beppe (Arlecchino) = Boiko Zvetanov
Silvio = Gabriel Bermudez
Erster Bauer = Uwe Kosser
Zweiter Bauer = Christopher Hux

Daniele Callegari, conductor

Producer/production - Grischa Asagaroff
Set and costume design - Luigi Perego
Lighting - Hans-Rudolf Kunz
Choir rehearsal - Jürg Hämmerli
Choreography - Tetsu Taoshita

Unlike 2009 when the prologue with Carlo Guelfo was a disappointment I now enjoyed it. In 2009 the Italian soprano Fiorenza Cedolins sang the role of Nedda, now we had the Greek soprano Myrto Paptanasiu as Nedda. Now I could almost root for the unfaithful Nedda. Beppe was another role sung by another singer, instead of big Martin Zysset, a Swiss favorite, we had Boiko Zvetanov, the little, round tenor with  a Great Voice and personality that fitted his voice. He fitted right into the show.

Sloppily conducted by Daniele Callegari, the singers with Jose Cura (Canio) and Gabriel Bermudez (Silvio) as the routine tenors, it still was a great Pagliacci. I still don't like the blue in Pagliaccio's face, but that is minor.

SLY with Boiko Zvetanov
Luckily I had recently looked up JC's schedule at JCarreras.com . So it was no shock to find out that Boiko Zvetanow was singing Sly. Boiko was in great voice, and he is a good actor. Isabelle Kabatu was Dolly. She was a revelation. Touching, marvelous voice. Carlo Guelfi was the Count of Westmoreland. Difficult role. He was good, but Juan Pons was better. Oliver Widmer sang John Plake. He was drowned by the orchestra. (Carlos Chausson was formidable in this role).
